Performance Monitoring
One of the Regulator's key concerns is the performance of the Tasmanian water and sewerage industry. The Regulator aims to ensure that the interests of customers are not compromised by below standard service from the monopoly suppliers in the State. Public reporting is a powerful incentive for the industry to maintain and improve performance.
The Water and Sewerage Industry Act 2008 requires the Regulator to prepare a State of the Industry Report (SOIR) each year examining the performance of the Tasmanian water and sewerage industry. The Report is to be published on or before 1 April each year and tabled in the Parliament within seven sitting days of its finalisation.
In preparing the Report, the Regulator is required to consult with the Director of Public Health, the Director of the Environment Protection Authority and the Department of Primary Industries, Park, Water and Environment.
The objective of the Report is to publicly assess the performance of licensed providers of water and sewerage services.
The SOIR includes an overview of the performance of the water and sewerage industry and identifies key priorities for improved performance of the industry.
Each licensed entity is required to provide annual reports to the Regulator on the entity’s performance against measures outlined in the Performance and Information Reporting Guideline which was issued by the Regulator on 21 September 2010.
On 15 March 2012, the Regulator published the fourth annual Tasmanian Water and Sewerage State of the Industry Report 2010-11 which is the second year in which the report covers the three regional water corporations’ performance in providing water and sewerage services across the State, rather than councils. The report is a detailed review of the performance of the industry and provides insights to consumers of the ongoing capability of the industry. The Report also outlines opportunities for improved performance, as identified by industry regulators and the water corporations.
