A key concern of the Regulator is the performance of the electricity supply industry in Tasmania. The Regulator aims to ensure that the interests of customers are not compromised by a low standard of service from the monopoly suppliers in the State. Public reporting is a powerful incentive for the industry to maintain and improve performance.

All licensed entities are required to provide annual and/or quarterly reports to the Regulator on the entity’s performance against agreed standards, indicators and targets. OTTER reviews this data and compiles the information into a comprehensive report of the performance of the electricity supply industry (known as the Energy in Tasmania - Performance Report).

The Energy in Tasmania - Performance Report is a key source of information on the industry structure, its recent performance and future outlook. The Report also provides an evaluation of the reliability of the power system and assesses the outlook for reliability in the medium term (the next three to five years) - in effect, identifying the issues that will impact on "keeping the lights on".

Under the Electricity Supply Industry Act 1995 , the Regulator is required to prepare industry and reliability reports at least once in every three-year period, on its own initiative or when directed to do so by the Minister.

Prior to July 2015, the Regulator prepared performance reports annually. Click here for previous reports.

From time to time specific aspects of industry performance are also reviewed or investigated by the Office. Reports of these investigations and reviews are publicly available.

Major Incidents causing loss of power to consumers, are closely monitored. Reports on the causes and consequential action are also publicly available.

An important obligation on all entities in Tasmania is the requirement, on the request of the Regulator, for an independent review of entities' management plans and internal processes, through the engagement of an Independent Appraiser, to ensure the integrity of performance reports provided to the Regulator and to give the Regulator confidence that good electricity industry practice is being applied.

The Regulator’s Electricity Supply Industry Performance and Information Reporting Guideline provides guidance to licence holders under the Electricity Supply Industry Act 1995 on the Regulator's requirements for quarterly and/or annual performance reporting and complementary contextual information.
