In March 2001, Duke Energy entered into a development agreement with the State to bring natural gas to the State in the wholesale and transmission sectors.

Construction of the transmission pipeline was completed early in 2003.

In 2003 the State Government entered two development agreements with Powerco Ltd (now Tas Gas Networks Pty Ltd) for the construction and operation of gas distribution networks. A number of these networks are now operational and customers are being supplied with gas.
